They say that healers make the worst patients. With a know-it-all attitude coupled with an indestructible mentality, healers are the least likely to seek out another in need of help. They say healers are too proud, too confident, too arrogant.

They, unfortunately, would be right.

False labor, she had convinced herself. It'd been happening off and on for the past several weeks. Usually, it happened when she'd been sitting for too long. She found that walking helps the pain pass. The ripples of pain were fleeting, so it was never really a cause for concern.

So, after sitting in the Compass for an hour or so, she wasn't surprised or worried when the false contractions began again. Granted, they were a little more intense than usual, but at two and half weeks overdue, Flora had also convinced herself that this baby was never going to be born. Ever. She'd forever be the fat, pregnant woman of Myth.

One can imagine her surprise when the false contractions turned out not to be false at all.

And one can imagine Jeck's surprise, finding her leaning on the stable's door, panting and close to tears.

Walking had eased the pain before, so why wouldn't it work now? She hadn't been hobbling for very long before she found she couldn't walk anymore. Just needing a moment to catch her breath, she stopped at the tables, and rested against its door. Maybe she was just a bit tired, winded -- that was all. That was how Jeck found her. And what could he do? Believing her reassurance that this was normal, he offered to help her back inside. By the time they made it back to the tavern, up the stairs, and to her room, Flora crumpled to the floor, sobbing with each slash of hurt.

When it became obvious exactly what was happening, Jeck's attempt to go and fetch help was cut short by the healer's desperate pleas, "Don't leave me. I can't be alone," while clutching at his arm. He didn't leave, after that.

The messy details that followed don't need to mentioned.

Flora had more than her fair share of labor hysterics -- crying that she didn't want her baby born in a common tavern, growing up without a father, that this was all, all her fault, and Lord, why was she so stupid! And a dozen other similar sentiments.

Poor Jeck.

Night passed slowly for both, and when the dawn struck the sky with a bleak gray, Cecilia Anne Sedrickson made her way into this world.

Finally.
